Spotted Sea Trout

Spotted sea trout can be found from the Gulf of mexico to as far north as New York. They typically stay near shore and will move up coastal rivers in the winter. Ideal water temperatures for the spotted sea trout are 65 to 75 degrees farenheit.  Spotted sea trout typically spawn from may to early September. The males produce a drumming sound to attract the females during this time. They grow to an average size of 1 to 2 pounds but 5 to 6 pound spotted sea trout are not uncommon. The world record was caught in Florida and weighed 17 lbs. 7 oz.

You can catch spotted sea trout using baitcasting, spinning or flyfishing techniques. The most effective forms of live bait include shrimp and small fish. Artificial lures most commonly used are spoons, plastics and jigs.
